As the industry leans towards trends for larger products, BSI (British Standards Institution), the business improvement company, can now support the industry with testing larger products to the latest British and European standards.

The K S Schulten weather test rig, based at BSI’s Centre of Excellence, is reported to be one of the largest of its kind in the UK, and becomes operational at a time when the fenestration market is seeing continued growth in lifestyle products, and in particular, sliding doors including, bi-folds, slide and swing, patio and lift and slide.

The weather test rig can accommodate a single test sample up to 6.5m wide and 4m in height, including anything in between, manufactured from aluminium, PVC-U, timber, steel and composite materials, allowing manufacturers to prove performance to the latest weathertightness standard BS 6375-1:2015+A1:2016 Performance of Windows and Doors.

This follows on from BSI’s investment in 2017 to expand its existing enhanced security test rig to enable products to achieve PAS 24:2016 Enhanced Security Performance Requirements for Doorsets and Windows in the UK up to 6m in width and 3m in height.

Choosing third party certification such as the BSI Kitemark demonstrates an on-going voluntary commitment to raising the bar and offering a clear alternative against competitors, which helps drive continual improvement to make excellence a habit.

With the help of the new weather performance test rig, BSI clients can continue to differentiate themselves from the competition and demonstrate that their products have been robustly tested to their maximum size and limits. It also allows prospective customers, architects, and specifiers to make informed rather than compromised decisions about whether the installed product will perform as designed and specified.

“We would encourage any manufacturer launching a new product of this kind, or looking to extend their certification scope to incorporate larger sizes, to get in-touch. In addition to testing and certification to the latest standards we can also offer development days with our lab team where clients can pre-test a number of options to assist with product development.” Floyd Merrison, Laboratory Operations Manager, BSI
