Spotlight on Women in Fenestration: Clair Melville-Brown, Marketing Manager at MACO UK
Q: Tell us a bit about your role and what first drew you to the fenestration industry.
I’ve been the Marketing Manager at MACO for around 18 months now. Coming from outside the fenestration sector, I’ve found it incredibly refreshing to work in an industry that, despite wider economic and political uncertainty, remains so optimistic and forward-thinking - an attitude I personally live by.
Q: What have you learned since joining the industry?
The fenestration industry has opened my eyes to a world that most people rarely see. The level of engineering, precision, and infrastructure behind the products that feed into construction - from windows and doors to conservatories - is just incredible. I’ve also been warmly welcomed by colleagues, customers, and suppliers alike. There’s a genuine sense of support and collaboration that I find inspiring.
Q: How has your experience as a woman in the industry been so far?
Honestly, I haven’t felt that my gender defines how I’m perceived or received, which is fantastic. It’s also inspiring to see so many women in leadership positions across the industry. This is the first time I’ve attended sector events where there are so many women not only in the room, but leading the conversation.
Q: You’ve spoken about balancing career and family - what inspired you most on that journey?
When I had children, I joined a local women’s networking group and met an incredible community of self-employed women who had taken the leap to build flexible careers. Seeing that “it could be done” really encouraged me to pursue a part-time, self-employed role after maternity leave. It gave me that important balance when my children were young. The phrase “seeing is believing” really resonated - having visible role models makes such a difference.
Q: What role do allies play in creating an inclusive workplace?
I count myself lucky to be surrounded by men - at home and at work - who are true champions of equality. They cheer me on, walk alongside me, and create an environment where gender doesn’t define opportunity or success. Sadly, not everyone experiences that yet, which is why celebrating International Women’s Day remains so important. I have huge respect for those who set aside ego in favour of equality.
Q: How is MACO UK encouraging inclusion and development among women?
At MACO UK, we’ve joined both Women in Timber and Women in Fenestration, which give us fantastic platforms for networking, sharing experiences, and inspiring others. I want to show women, especially those returning to work after having children, that it can be done - you can step back onto the career ladder in your own time. I’m also very grateful to MACO for supporting my professional development through a MiniMBA in Leadership - a brilliant opportunity to continue growing in my role.
Q: If you could describe women in fenestration in one word, what would it be?
Aspirational.
